Embracing New Beginnings: The Arrival of Spring and the Philosophy of Change
As we step into March, the promise of spring draws near. The days grow longer, and nature begins its shift from the cold stillness of winter to the vibrant life of spring in bloom. This seasonal change offers us more than just a change in weather—it’s a reminder of the new beginnings that are always possible, regardless of where we are in life. If we focus on the things we can control and make the brave steps toward change.
Existential philosophy, particularly the work of thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Viktor Frankl, teaches us that new beginnings are not about waiting for circumstances to change, that voice that says “ I will be happy when…” but about embracing our ability to choose. Sartre’s concept of being “condemned to be free” emphasizes that we are always responsible for our choices. Spring, then, becomes a metaphorical symbol of the constant opportunity to reinvent ourselves, even in difficult times. Each moment offers a chance to make choices that reflect what we value, want and who we truly are.
This philosophy aligns with principles in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a modality I have been reflecting on a lot recently. ACT encourages us to accept our thoughts and feelings, even the uncomfortable ones, without letting them dictate our actions. It teaches psychological flexibility—the ability to experience life as it is, while staying true to our values and moving toward meaningful goals. Just as spring naturally unfolds after winter, our growth happens when we accept the present moment, instead of forcing change.
As we approach the new season, think about what new beginnings might be calling to you. Where in your life might you need to practice more acceptance or self-compassion? Where can you commit to actions that reflect your deepest values or goals? Spring invites us to reflect on these questions and take deliberate action, even if it means facing discomfort or uncertainty. By accepting where we are, just like nature does with its seasons, we open ourselves to the possibility of growth and renewal.
This spring, take time to reflect on how you can embrace change, accept what you cannot control, and make choices that align with who you are becoming. The season of renewal offers us a reminder that we are always, no matter what age or situation we are in, capable of creating new beginnings in our lives and the challenges we face.
